Steven R Goldstein - An Expert Gynecologist in New York City

Why see Dr. Steven R. Goldstein, New York City’s #1 Gynecologist?

I am Dr. Steven R. Goldstein MD, a board-certified gynecologist in NYC, and I am the only medical personnel you will see on your visit from beginning to end. No physician assistant or any other doctor. And since I work by appointment only, stick to schedule and am more interested in your care than over booking my office, you’re not going to sit in the waiting room for long.

Since my passion is patient care, one patient at a time, you will never be rushed on your visit, and you will not leave my office until all your questions have been answered, your care discussed thoroughly, your conditions, if any, gone over in detail and your treatment plan mutually agreed upon. So please allow at least an hour for your visit to my office.

I listen to patients. I use transvaginal ultrasound liberally when solving problems. I partner with patients who want to be healthy and stay healthy. I believe in using experience, judgment, and individualization—not medicine by a “clinical pathway,” or what you might call “formulaic.” You are an individual, and your case is unique to me.

I will even personally do your transvaginal ultrasounds and Sonohysterograms (I’m a pioneer in this field and wrote many textbooks on gynecologic ultrasounds). My education, training, credentials, and publications demonstrate that I am an expert in transvaginal ultrasounds for abnormal bleeding, ovarian masses, fibroids, and, essentially, all things gynecological.

I’m a skilled transvaginal ultrasound and sonogram operator who wants to see the uterine cavity, the uterus, Fallopian tubes, ovaries, for myself. I do not rely on a technician or a written report to tell me what was seen. Furthermore, if there is a problem we can look at it together on high resolution images and color doppler.

Patients who have been told they need surgery elsewhere but want more than just “a second opinion” are always referred to me by other specialists. I am also referred extremely difficult cases by other gynecologists. I developed a catheter to put a tablespoon of sterile saline into the uterus, so women with abnormal uterine bleeding can avoid unnecessary painful biopsies, dilations and curettage procedures, and hysterectomies.

As a tenured Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University Grossman School of Medicine, I am aware of all the cutting-edge technology available to improve your health. In fact, my clinical research and publications in the field have had a significant influence on the way gynecology is practiced, much of it being adopted as the standard of care by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

I welcome the opportunity to use my experience and expertise to help you, no matter how big or small your gynecologic concerns may be. Please schedule your appointment below.

Dr. Steven R. Goldstein, a top New York city gynecologist, has been working closely with patients for more than 25 years to understand their unique medical histories, clearly explain diagnosis and, together, identify the best treatment option that will provide the highest level of result. An expert gynecologist in New York City, he is considered one of the nation’s top doctors in gynecology.

Dr. Goldstein often works with women interested in learning more about their gynecologic diagnosis and treatment options, including less invasive approaches. Dr. Goldstein has published seven books on women’s health topics, including menopause, perimenopause, early pregnancy monitoring, abnormal uterine bleeding and gynecologic ultrasounds. He has also contributed numerous chapters and papers to the medical field. Dr. Goldstein is a sought-after lecturer, traveling the U.S. and the world to speak about issues related to obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Goldstein is available for consultations on a range of women's health issues including but not limited to Ovarian Cysts, thick uterine linings, heavy menstrual bleeding (vaginal bleeding), uterine polyps, uterine fibroids, abnormal pap smears, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), and early pregnancy monitoring to prevent miscarriages, early uterine pregnancy and more

Clinical Research and Publications

Dr Steven R. Goldstein’s clinical research has had a significant influence on the way gynecology is practiced.

In 1991, he was the first to suggest that a thin, distinct endometrial echo on transvaginal ultrasound in postmenopausal bleeding did not indicate the need for a biopsy. This was finally adopted as the standard of care by the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) in 2009.

In 1989, he was the first to suggest that simple cysts of postmenopausal ovaries were benign and did not require surgical intervention. In 2009 that, too, became the standard of care.

In 1994, he first described endometrial fluid collections on vaginal sonograms as a naturally occurring, de facto sonohysterogram and determined that when tissue surrounding the fluid is thin, endometrial disease can be excluded.

In 1994, he first described endometrial fluid collections on vaginal sonograms as a naturally occurring, de facto sonohysterogram and determined that when tissue surrounding the fluid is thin, endometrial disease can be excluded.

Also in 1994, he was the first to describe the glandular cystic atrophy causing an unusual ultrasound appearance in women receiving tamoxifen, and has since been involved in the study of—and has published research on—practically every selective estrogen-receptor modulator, including raloxifene, lasofoxifene, levormeloxifene, arzoxifene, and ospemifene.

Dr. Goldstein was the first, in 2004, to warn against unnecessary biopsy in nonbleeding postmenopausal patients with an incidental finding of thick endometrial lining on vaginal sonogram, which was affirmed by ACOG in its Practice Bulletin in 2009, and reaffirmed in 2015.

Since 1995, Dr. Goldstein has argued against blind endometrial biopsies. He also championed saline infusion sonohysterogram—which was finally endorsed by ACOG in its Practice Bulletin in 2012.
